School for Oriental Religions: a school for dialogue

“Yesterday it came to me that we have to know these religions deeply…” wrote Chiara Lubich in 1982

[…] We are not able to open a fruitful dialogue with these our brothers without knowing their richness. I think that schools for this purpose will be established also through the work of the Movement.” When, on January 14, 1982, Chiara Lubich wrote these lines she had just arrived in the Philippines, just after the experience in Tokyo at the Sacred Hall of Rissho Kosei-kai.

In the following days, with the  courage of the prophets, she founded the School for Oriental Religions (S.O.R.) that for almost twenty years has offered courses on the various religions in Asia. The participants, members of the Focolare, most from the Philippines but also from neighboring countries, are trained in a new vision, both in the light of the charism of the spirituality of communion, that is revealed ever more as the spirit of dialogue, and also reaching to the roots of the teaching of the Church in the Vatican Council, and the teaching of the Church in these last forty years.

Today the school, directed by Dr. Kres Gabijan and by Dr. Stephen Lo, the former a Filipino and the latter from Hong Kong, is in a recently restored house that includes a library, a meeting room, and various offices. The current director is Mons. Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij, recently named archbishop of Bangkok. In March of 2009, the S.O.R. offered a course on “Interreligious dialogue in the teachings of the Church,” in which 250 people participated.

Maria Voce and Giancarlo Faletti visited the headquarters of the School, giving important guidance for the future, above all for the training of a new group of leaders who can ensure that the prophetic idea of Chiara Lubich continues to inspire the training in a mentality of dialogue.

    Bellissimo! Splendido!
E la offriremo fino all’ultimo respiro.

for giving the opportunity to follow the visit of Emmaus and Giancarlo to some countries in Asia, grazie di cuore.
    indeed, love conquers all.

Jaime
